How Much Storage Do Large Photo and Video Archives Need?

Plan disk space for large digital archives without running out of room during downloads, extraction, or backups.

Quick answer

Plan for more free storage than the listed archive size. For a direct folder download, keeping roughly 15 to 25 percent extra space is a practical buffer. For a compressed archive that must be extracted, you may temporarily need space for both the downloaded archive and the extracted files.

Direct folder downloads

If a cloud folder is listed at 100 GB, having exactly 100 GB free is too tight. Operating systems, temporary files, and filesystem overhead all consume space. A healthy buffer also prevents the drive from becoming completely full, which can hurt system performance.

Compressed archives need extra room

A 100 GB compressed archive can require much more than 100 GB of temporary free space if you download the archive first and then extract it alongside the original. The exact requirement depends on compression ratio and whether you remove the source archive after extraction.

Think about backup capacity too

If the collection matters enough to keep, the download drive should not be the only copy. A second local drive or separate storage service means your real capacity requirement may be roughly double the collection size over time.

For very large libraries, capacity planning is easier when you compare pack size before unlocking instead of discovering the size after the download begins.
